Sponge Cola’s Yael Yuzon Shares Advice for Artists Feeling Lost

For many artists, one of the hardest things to deal with is the feeling that they are falling behind.

During a recent conversation on Once and Always a Fanboy, Sponge Cola frontman Yael Yuzon opened up about creative pressure, self doubt, and why so many artists struggle with the idea of failure.

“I have friends who perceive themselves as failed artists,” he shared. “But when they talk to me, I think, ‘Dude, you did so much.’”

According to him, many creatives become so focused on the goals they did not reach that they forget to acknowledge everything they already accomplished along the way.

“I guess it is easier to see the things you did not achieve as opposed to the things that were achieved,” he said.

It was one of the most honest moments in the conversation, especially coming from someone who has spent more than two decades in the music industry. Instead of speaking about success as awards, numbers, or popularity, he spoke about fulfillment, growth, and perspective.

“My equation is really just fulfillment in relation to goals,” he explained. “You could have all these goals, but if you are not fulfilled, that might not actually be success.”

For artists currently going through a creative slump, his message was simple: do not define your entire journey by one unmet expectation.

“From not hitting that intended goal, there are those sub goals that you actually did hit,” he said.

After more than 20 years with Sponge Cola, it is a perspective that feels earned. Success, according to him, is not always about reaching a specific destination. Sometimes it is about continuing to create, continuing to grow, and continuing to believe there is still something worth making.
