Beyond the Fights: What Keeps Mortal Kombat Resonating With Fans

With a franchise like Mortal Kombat, it’s easy to assume people come back for the fights, the spectacle, and the finishers. But for Ludi Lin and Max Huang, the core of it goes deeper than that.

“I think the core is Ed Boon and John Tobias,” Max said, pointing to the original creators of the franchise. What stands out to him isn’t just what they built, but how they’ve carried it. “It’s so amazing how they could come up with so many iconic characters and still be so humble about it.”

“It’s very diverse,” Ludi said. And it’s not something that feels added on. It’s built into the DNA of the world itself. The characters, the fighting styles, and the influences all come from different parts of the world.

“You see so many different people on screen,” he explained. “All the characters represent what the world looks like.” From Asian martial arts roots to other fighting disciplines, Mortal Kombat reflects a range of cultures and perspectives. That’s what gives it a sense of scale beyond just the action.

It’s also what makes it feel more grounded. Even in a heightened, almost mythological world, there’s something familiar in the way these characters are built. They represent different backgrounds, different philosophies, and different ways of fighting.

At the heart of it, Mortal Kombat isn’t just about who wins. It’s about the world those fights exist in, and the people that bring that world to life.

And that’s what keeps audiences coming back.
