Good Kid Explains Why Computer Science and Music Are More Similar Than You Think

Before forming Good Kid, several members of the band studied computer science. While music and programming may seem very different on the surface, the band believes both involve creativity, patience, and problem solving. During their conversation on Once and Always a Fanboy, the band shared how their background in technology has influenced the way they approach songwriting and collaboration as independent artists.
“I think music is a lot more science than people give it credit for, and programming is also a lot more feeling than people give it credit for,” said Jacob Tsafatinos (Guitarist). Learning an instrument often requires repetition and gradual improvement, similar to learning how to code. In both cases, progress can take time, and mistakes are part of the process. Whether writing a piece of music or building software, the goal is often to create something meaningful from an idea that starts very small.
The band explained that both music and programming involve imagination and experimentation. “Both programming and music… you’re creating something from thin air just from your imagination,” Jacob Tsafatinos shared. Even though the tools may be different, the process of turning an idea into something tangible can feel very similar. Both fields also involve learning from others, testing different approaches, and slowly refining the final result.
Their experience working in technical environments has also helped the band manage their career independently. Being comfortable with collaboration and organization allows them to coordinate projects without relying heavily on traditional industry structures. This independence gives them flexibility in how they release music and interact with fans, while still maintaining control over their creative direction. For Good Kid, the connection between technology and music continues to influence how they write, produce, and share their work.
