Christian Bautista Opens Up About Obsessing Over Perfection Early in His Career

Christian Bautista, one of the Philippines’ most famous balladeers, recently shared what it was like for him when he was starting out. He said that before performances, he was obsessed with singing perfectly. “I really wanted to sing cleanly. Hopefully not too much raspiness, hopefully not too many flats or sharps,” he said. It got so intense that if his voice cracked during a gig, he would get super frustrated. “I slammed my hand against the wooden wall in the dressing room,” he admitted. That really shows how much he cared about hitting every note.
Now, Bautista says he’s learned to accept that his voice isn’t always perfect and that it changes as he gets older. “I accept the flaws. I accept the age also. Sometimes my voice evolves. If there’s rawness or raspiness, that’s who I am now,” he explained. He still does his best to sing well, but he doesn’t let mistakes crush him like before. Even as a singing contest judge, he welcomes criticism because he knows everyone makes mistakes and it’s all part of learning.
What’s really cool about this is how he went from stressing over perfection to embracing imperfection. It makes his performances feel more real and human, and it’s something a lot of singers and fans can relate to. Bautista’s story is proof that letting go of the need to be flawless can actually make you a better performer.
