Charlize Theron on Rewriting the Rules of Survival in APEX

When Charlize Theron talks about her role in APEX, what stands out is how specific and intentional her thinking is about character. It’s not about making things bigger, but about making certain choices more deliberate.
When I asked what she wanted to do differently with Sasha, Theron pointed out that the film has “a very straightforward premise… the hunter and the one being hunted.” But for her, the focus was on avoiding a dynamic that felt overly gendered.
“I was really keen to avoid… making it so gender specific that it was like the man hunting the woman,” Theron explained. She noted that stories like this often fall into familiar patterns, especially for female characters under threat.
“They tend to kind of plead their way out of things,” she added.
That’s exactly what she wanted to steer away from.
“I never plead,” Theron shared, emphasizing how intentional that choice was. It shifts how the character exists within those high-pressure moments. Instead of appealing for mercy, Sasha stays engaged in the situation.
“I really did not want to find myself tied and somewhat helpless… just pleading,” she continued.
Theron also acknowledged that this isn’t something most viewers will consciously pick up on. “No one else will even ever notice this,” she said, almost brushing it off. But those kinds of decisions still shape how a character feels overall.
Rather than leaning into something expected, she wanted a more balanced interaction between the two leads. “I just thought there was a more interesting way… where we could have more of a back and forth,” Theron noted.
It’s a subtle adjustment, but it gives the character a different kind of presence, one that feels more active and less defined by familiar tropes.
